The Cybersecurity in the Built Environment (Cyber-BE) Lab conducts interdisciplinary social science research that focuses on the needs and values of organizations, building industry professionals, and local communities to improve cybersecurity in the built environment.

Our research addresses issues such as:

  • How can we improve collaboration between IT and Facilities professionals working with IoT systems?
  • How do we help architect, engineering, and construction (AEC) teams and IoT designers better understand the data security and privacy needs of owners, occupants, and local communities?
  • How can we integrate data privacy into equitable and sustainable design frameworks?
  • What are the implications of IoT in the built environment whose data collection crosses the boundaries between public and private space?
  • How do we measure the Return on Investment for specific IoT systems that incorporates increasing maintenance needed during the building lifecycle?
  • What government policies exist and what helps and hurts cybersecurity?
  • What are the labor practices that undergird IoT in the built environment?
  • What are the implications of the trajectory of IoT use–including cutting edge technology such as 5G?
